What kind of city do you want?
————————————————————————–
Hi Everyone,
Calgarians face the responsibility to be a part of decisions that will guide our city through the challenges and opportunities in front of us. It is important to our community that we are engaged with our city, and with each other.
I am writing to invite you to participate in an event on Thursday January 28th at the #1 legion- a downtown Calgary historical landmark. This event will be attended by students, workers, local cultural and community leaders, business people, and others taking a role in the future of our city. This is an opportunity to get together and talk about building the Calgary we want to live in.
What do you love about Calgary?
What are some things that could be different?
What are the best ways to get there- what can we do as individuals, what can we do in our community, what can the city government do, and what can the business community do?
There will be no speeches and no platforms. The purpose of this forum is to help put leadership back in the hands of the community. We all have something to learn from each other.
At 7pm we will gather in the upstairs room at the Legion and organize into to groups to discuss issues that we care about. As the night goes on the groups will mix and share the ideas they have discussed. The theme of the event is “The Calgary we want,”. This conversation will be facilitated by federal public servant and leadership specialist Bob Chartier and will take place from 7pm to 9pm. Afterwards you are welcome to stay and continue the conversation while local songwriter Matt Masters and his band play a free concert.
This event is free and open to the public- people of all ages and backgrounds are encouraged to attend.
Please pass this email on to anyone who you think would like to take part.

I’d like to come to this, and I might – but I have to admit, I don’t know much about what’s going on in our city. So, I’m hoping it’s lax enough for someone like me to come by and listen & learn.
What do I want?
1. Greater city support of Arts in Calgary
2. Stonger efforts by the city regarding environmental policy. Extension of the recycling program to apartments and condo complexes.
3. Enhancement of Calgary Transit system. More train lines that do not go through the core. More BRT lines. Swipe passes to reduce paper tickets and passes. Direct shuttles at peak periods.
4. More development and support of small businesses and less reliance on Big-box chains.
What I want:
1) A city hall that does not placate to the demands of developers. They shouldn’t be scared of change; strong businesses will adapt, and make money off denser developments. Build Up, it’s cheaper for the taxpayer.
2) I’m sick of the police force saying we need greater fines for speeding, greater fines for littering, etc.; when they are the ones who pick up the fine money and spend it on more officers. A police force that is not political. The job of a police force is to simply enforce the law, and not to give their interpretation of how laws are to be enforced. That is what a judge is for.
3) The mustard seed project is going to have a massive impact in Ward 8. Concentrating people with a variety of health issues will be negative to the community, and increase crime. Just look how projects turn out in the U.S. Spread low income around the community.
4) I really want increased LRT in the city. Get cars off the road, and let me get to the airport on a train. Calgary to be seen as a global city needs a train to the airport, not a tunnel. Roads in the NE are under capacity.
5) This is dreaming, but more bars on electric ave with an open liquor area!
